Summer is coming quickly and it is going to be a hot one. Most everyone will want to head to the pool to cool down. If you manage public pools – in parks, home communities, or fitness / recreational facilities, you will want to feel comfortable that your pool signage is in compliance with the California codes and requirements.
On average you will likely see about a dozen signs around a pool and/or spa area. These signs are required by law and must meet certain specifications. These requirements can be found in California Building Code Chapter 31B, Section 3120B.
While many public pools display these off-the-shelf pool signs (see picture above) such signs may take away from the ambiance or theme of a luxury or secluded resort. At Starfish Signs & Graphics we can customize your pool signage to match the style of your public pool area and still meet the California requirements for pool-side signage.
Just a few examples – when it comes to pool signage, some of the major requirements concern the sizing of the letters and numbers and the placement of the signs relative to the swimming and access areas.
3120B.1 General. All signs shall have clearly legible letters or numbers not less than 4 inches (102 mm) high, unless otherwise required in this section, affixed to a wall, pole, gate or similar permanent structure in a location visible to all pool users.
Some signs that are required for public pools are Capacity Signs, No Diving Signs, No Lifeguard Signs, Emergency Signs, Warning Signs for spa pool, and others.

New Required Pool Sign
Because of the increasing crowds that populate the pools every year additional signs have been mandated for the added safety of all swimmers. In 2012 additional signs were added to the required pool signs list which to now include: a Diarrhea Sign, Keep Closed Sign, No Use after Dark Sign, an Emergency Shutoff Sign, and more.
Although there is not a requirement regarding the materials of construction, outdoor signs should be designed to withstand the outdoor elements – including the challenging combination of water, chlorine and sun. Typically these signs are created from aluminum with reflective vinyl graphics or high durability paint.
