Yard signs are the most ubiquitous form of signage today. Typically we think of yard signs as the disposable plastic signs on wire frames advertising yard services, yard sales, house painting, etc. And we are right to think of these. A typical “yard sign” within the industry refers to a 18″ x 24″ sign made from a corrugated plastic (coroplast) substrate with either cut vinyl or direct printed information on both sides and mounted on a wire stake or “H” frame. These signs are often the first choice for contractors because they are relatively inexpensive to have made and to leave behind. They are light weight and can withstand the weather for several months which makes them an ideal choice for contractors to advertise a new paint job, roof repair, or other services.
Other common forms of yard signs include real estate signs. These signs are generally constructed from more durable materials because they are meant to be reused. Unlike a coroplast sign, a real estate sign uses aluminum panel with vinyl or printed information applied. These panels are housed in an aluminum or plastic frame that can be easily staked in the ground and will withstand the elements for years. Frames generally come with additional slots for “riders” and can have literature keepers mounted to them for take one fliers.
A more prominent type of yard sign is the post or post and panel construction. Realtors and leasing agents will sometimes opt for a post sign when advertising a more expensive property or where home owner association covenants prohibit stake style yard signs. Post signs are generally made of wood with an arm bracket from which the sign will hang. Post signs can also be used as permanent signage in more traditional applications or when a lower budget street sign is needed.
Post and panel signs consist of two or three large posts with one or two large panels (usually 4′ x 8″) between. These are the types of signs most commonly seen at construction sites, advertising large land parcels or used to reach passers by from a distance. Single panel signs usually front a property while dual panel signs are generally angled at corners or to attract two-way traffic. Post and panel signs (usually) leverage a professional installer to ensure the sign is properly set and permitted.
There are as many types of signs as there are conditions requiring signs. To be sure that you have the right signage tool for your application, consult with a professional sign company for recommendations and pricing.
