I hope you’re having a great day. This is going to be one of the most inspiring posts coming from FocalPoint Business Coaching of Plymouth, MN for anyone who wants to achieve career success. It’s about my meeting with a high school freshman, Jack, last Sunday, during which I helped him clarify his goals and develop a solid plan to achieve them. Here are some details about our discussion: Unfolding the Discussion Goal-Setting Once Jack disclosed his underlying goals to me, I found that they could be categorized into three main types for clarity purposes, namely academic, social, and sports-related. Here is a list of goals he wants to achieve:

• Improve grades and raise his GPA to his desired level.
• Meet new people.
• Join certain organizations to find such people.
• Acquire new friends.
• Set up the Freshman baseball team this spring.

I asked some questions to gain a deeper understanding of his goals and used his answers to build on those goals and eliminate any ambiguities related to them. Goal-Achievement When I observed that Jack is now pretty clear on his goals, we collectively set some realistic deadlines. Next, we tried to determine the obstacles that may hold him back from accomplishing the goals and devised solutions to dodge or tackle them. While coming up with solutions, we brainstormed about the types of people he needed to connect with, and any other resources he might need. Among our identified groups that he should stay connected with include friends, teachers, coaches, and of course, his mom and dad. More importantly, we looked into how to leverage and make the most out of these resources for accelerating the goal-achievement process. The outcome of the meeting was a two-page document listing down Jack’s goals, what needs to happen, what exactly he should do now, in this quarter, in the Spring term, and in this year to achieve those goals. Why Not You? In the days that followed, Jack has been religiously following the plan and reporting to me on his progress after returning from school each day. And mind you, he’s actually been checking the boxes, so he’s right on track to make it to the top. For your information, Jack is just 14 years old. When Jack, at an age when children don’t like doing their homework, is taking his plan seriously and to the heart, why not you as a professional, a business owner, or perhaps a leader?
