Ruger American 9MM - Ideal for Goodyear Owners?

Ruger has struggled to gain traction in the full-size pistol market despite the popularity of their rugged revolver designs. Models like the P85, SR9 and now American 9MM represent their efforts to appeal to semi-auto fans. But how does this value-priced 9MM stack up for owners in Goodyear and greater Phoenix? We took the American to our premium shooting range C2 Tactical in Phoenix to find out.

On paper, the Ruger American 9MM Duty seems to check all the boxes – striker-fired action, polymer frame, stainless slide, ambidextrous controls and reputable Novak sights. However, handling revealed flaws that numbers alone don’t show. While reasonably accurate and reliable, we found the American lacks refinement compared to competitors like Glock and Smith & Wesson available for similar prices.

Poor Ergonomics Limit Shootability

The American touts an interchangeable backstrap system like many pistols. But swapping inserts failed to achieve a comfortable fit for most testers. The awkward junction between frame and backstrap over the web of the hand simply doesn’t conform to natural grip shape. This forces an unnatural hold and strains the wrist.

The heavy steel slide also exacerbates substantial muzzle flip, slowing follow up shots. While recoil itself feels soft, quickly realigning sights takes extra work compared to lighter polymer-slide pistols. For defensive or competition use, the American’s shootability trails the market.

Mushy Trigger Hinders Accuracy

Surprisingly decent accuracy emerged when firing the American slowly off a rest. But the heavy, mushy trigger hold it back during rapid fire. Skilled shooters can learn to manage it, but smoother triggers exist even on value-priced pistols. With no aftermarket options, Ruger’s poor trigger design severely limits the American’s accuracy potential.

Positives Found in Reliability and Controls

On the plus side, the American proved reliable with various defensive and practice ammo. The ambidextrous slide stop and magazine release worked well for left and right-handed shooters. Adjustable Novak sights stayed put and offered clear sight alignment. The substantial slide ensures +P rounds won’t batter the American.

But these bright spots simply bring the American to parity with well-established models – not compelling advantages. It lacks any standout innovation or performance compared to venerable Smith, Glock and Springfield pistols popular with Phoenix-area owners.

Pricing Creates No Value Proposition

Our biggest gripe with the American 9MM is its pricing. At $550 MSRP, it costs as much or more than objectively better pistols. With next to no aftermarket parts or holster options, you can’t modify or accessorize the American either. Its price fails to reflect any performance advantage or brand prestige. We see no reason for Goodyear gun owners to choose the American over its market-leading competition.

In the end, Ruger’s American pistol strives for adequacy when greatness is expected at its price point. While acceptable as a range gun, its flaws make the American a poor choice for personal defense or competition. Until pricing drops significantly, or Ruger makes major design improvements, it will likely remain an also-ran pistol. Simply put, far better values exist without compromise for Goodyear buyers.
