Local Gun Instructors Shoot & Review the KAHR P380
In certain situations, it’s convenient and occasionally necessary to carry a very small gun. Some people like to completely conceal a weapon, others might like the light weight of a smaller gun, and in any case small pistols have been increasing in popularity in recent years.
Relatively new gun maker KAHR introduced one of the first micro-compact handguns in its P380 over a decade ago, and we wanted to test out this small gun’s capabilities by putting it in the hands of experts and seeking their feedback on its performance relative to comparable offerings on the market today.

We put the KAHR P380 in the hands of our NRA-certified instructors, many of whom have a background in law enforcement or the military, and asked for their honest feedback on this small but powerful weapon. For starters, this is a small gun. If you haven’t seen or held a P380 before, you will be surprised the first time you put one in your hand. At 5” long and 4” tall, the entire gun fits in the palm of a hand and it weighs just ten ounces without the magazine. It’s also less than one inch wide, making it one of the smallest guns you can buy. This size gun certainly is not for everyone, some of our instructors simply said it’s too small for their style, but if compactness is important to you then this gun certainly fits the bill.
Despite its small size, our team was surprised with how solid the small gun felt and the quality of construction of the firearm. KAHR did a good job of making the small frame as ergonomically friendly as possible, as a somewhat normal grip can still be achieved after a little getting used to. The texture of the gun is essential given its small size, and although the gun has quite a bit of recoil, the ridges and texture on the handle do inspire confidence with each shot.
The P380 features a double-action trigger as a safety function, but if you are concerned about the pull you shouldn’t be; the trigger action is smooth and satisfying. With the small gun still packing 6 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber, it is a great choice for people who want to carry an ultra-compact pistol.
