A Few Things To Know About Iron Recycling
It may be surprising to learn that iron recycling is a thing—but it is. In fact, there are a few things you should know about this process if you’re interested in making sure your old motorcycle parts don’t go to waste.
First of all, you may have heard that recycling is good for the environment. That’s true! But when it comes to recycling iron, it’s important to know that not all types of iron are equal when it comes to environmental impact. Iron recycling can be accomplished using two different processes: Direct reduction and Indirect reduction.
Direct reduction involves converting scrap metal into its elemental form by breaking down the metal using heat and pressure. This method uses less energy than indirect reduction and produces fewer harmful byproducts than the latter method. However, the direct reduction doesn’t produce as much pure iron as indirect reduction does, which means that some companies choose not to use this process because they need more pure iron than direct reduction can provide them with.
Indirect Reduction involves heating scrap metal in an oxygen-rich environment (such as air), which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere along with other gaseous byproducts like hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide—both of which are toxic when inhaled over long periods of time (or at all).
