Purchasing Recycled Iron is More Sustainable Than Creating New Metal
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), iron and steel represent a large portion of municipal waste. In 2018, over 10 million tons of ferrous metals were placed in landfills – representing a slight increase from the previous year. Although the country’s disposal of municipal waste in landfills has increased, 6 million tons of ferrous metals were also recycled that same year, representing a slight increase from 2017. Take a look at some of the disadvantages of creating new metals by mining ore:
- Creating new metals is an expensive process and requires extensive draining of resources due to the rigorous process of mining: aside from the higher price of acquiring new metal, other consequences include a higher carbon emission output as fossil fuels are used during the process, intensive water usage is necessary for extractions and waste disposal, and years-long erosion of natural habitats is a common occurrence.
- Mining causes hazardous substances and chemicals to release into the air, soil, and water – causing danger to wildlife and human health.
- Mining disturbs the physical structure of various plots of land, creating excavation holes in the area.
In addition to the costly and risky process of mining, the materials are ultimately transported into landfills where they take up valuable space. At our facility, we naturally comply with the circular economy model that several organizations such as the EPA suggests following: we reduce and redefine waste into ready-to-use, high-quality products and materials which become reincorporated into construction projects, building, and manufacturing.
