Difference Between Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals
Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are two types of metals that have different chemical makeup. They’re both useful for many different things in your everyday life, but they also have some key differences.
Ferrous metals are those that contain iron (that is, the element Fe). Examples include steel, cast iron, wrought iron, and stainless steel. Ferrous metals contain a lot of carbon and low levels of other elements like sulfur or phosphorus.
Non-ferrous metals are those that don’t contain iron (that is, the element Fe). Examples include copper, tin, aluminum, lead and zinc. Non-ferrous metals contain more silicon than ferrous metals do, as well as other elements like boron or manganese. These elements make non-ferrous metals softer than ferrous ones—they’re easier to dent or bend without breaking if you hit them with something hard enough!
