Giving scrap iron new life through recycling

At Richard S. Burns & Company Inc., we pride ourselves on how we not only recycle and dispose safely of waste and other items, but we also recycle, reuse, and recover materials that are ready to be used again. Since the 1960s, we have continually been working towards helping the environment and improving sustainability in our economy. Here are just a few of the wide variety of materials we recycle:

  • Iron
  • Plastic
  • Glass
  • Wood
  • Cardboard
  • Brick
  • Concrete

At our facility, open six days a week, you can find all sorts of different iron-based metals that can either be resold or reused. Did you know that metals, like iron, can be recycled endlessly without losing their original properties or value? Along with products like recycled wood, tile, glass, cobblestones, porcelain, and more, we also have iron-based products available as well. This includes steel, black cast iron, light iron, and more. Here are just a few of the reasons why people prefer to recycle and reuse iron-based materials:

  • It is typically cheaper. Recycled metal is highly sought after because it is less expensive. It costs a lot more to produce new iron from raw materials than to buy it recycled. The overall process takes a lot less time and therefore does not use as much energy, fuel, or resources.
  • It is better for the environment and the economy. A large amount of energy and resources goes into the process of making iron-based materials. One of the ferrous (iron) materials we recycle here at Burns Company is steel, and according to ASM Metal Recycling, “The recycling of steel helps to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% compared to manufacturing new steel from raw materials.” Additionally, we further preserve the earth’s natural resources when we choose to recycle and reuse these materials.
  • It can be fun. Have you ever been on the hunt for a specific piece of scrap metal and felt elated when you finally found it? This process is a lot more enjoyable when you have to search for a piece of recycled material, then repurpose it for your own project. Plus, knowing that you help support the environment when you purchase or sell recycled products is a great bonus!
  • It prevents reusable products from being sent to landfills. Some people might assume that iron-based products cannot be reused or recycled and instead choose to dispose of them. However, as previously mentioned, these metals can be recycled over and over without losing their original properties. So, instead of contributing to landfills with these materials, we decide to repurpose them.

If you are looking for environmentally friendly, recycled, and reusable products from a trusted source, then head on over to our facility to get started. With over 40 years of experience and handling more than 1,500 tons of recycling and waste per day, we are ready to discuss and assist you with any needs you might have. Feel free to also contact our office at 215.324.6377 with any questions.
