The job market has been fantastic for job seekers in recent years, but on the other side of this equation employers have been working through labor shortages, periods of understaffing and increased wages from competitors. This shortage has been tougher on small businesses, which often operate on tighter margins and can’t always afford to increase pay or compete with larger corporations. If you own a small business and can relate to this, then this article is for you. We will cover a few proven tips to attract and retain top talent even in a tight labor market, some of which can help give your small business a competitive advantage over the bigger players in your market. I am a business coach based in the Philadelphia, PA area, and recruiting is just one area of business operation where my expertise can help a company thrive. I have worked with companies of all sizes and industries, and my job as a business coach is to help the company reach its goals. Today we will cover recruiting, but if you want to take your business to the next level then I am here to help in any way I can. Read on for a few helpful tips for recruiting in our area. These are meant to help small businesses in general, but if your company has a need for a business coach then we can work together to make a plan tailored to fit your needs. Be Prepared In this competitive job market, applicants are interviewing companies just as much as the company interviews their prospective employees. For this reason, the employer must present themselves professionally, offer a competitive salary and benefits package and work to address the needs of their employees. In advance of an interview, research what other companies are offering and how you can offer a competitive advantage. Practice interview questions and take care to present yourself in a professional manner, don’t “wing it” with your interviews. This professionalism can be the difference in landing the employee or them choosing to work with your competition. Look Internally Promoting from within is a great way to strengthen your company. It’s often the case for an entry-level position to be easier to fill than a higher role, so if you can elevate a well-performing employee then you might have better luck backfilling their old role. Remember, if you do this, always provide the existing employee with training to thrive in their new role. Market the Job Most of us are familiar with marketing for the sale of our products or services, but this job market has led many companies to begin marketing their job postings as well. Depending on your needs, it might make sense to allocate some of your marketing budget toward filling your workforce needs through print ads, flyers, online advertising, radio ads or other creative media. We can work to determine the most effective way to advertise your company’s unique openings. These are just a few ways to kick start your recruiting. For in-depth coaching tailored to your company’s needs, give me a call or fill out the questionnaire on my website to get started today.
