A school is a gated learning community, an honored establishment that plays a major role in society. As such, it needs an outdoor sign to welcome children, parents, district officials, and other visitors through its doors. In many schools, the first object you pass when you enter the gates is one of our signs.
School building signs are designed to radiate a sense of respectability and wisdom. A good school sign must be attractive and visible without being flashy. A popular design is to mount the sign in the grounds near school gates on two posts or brick piers. Sometimes, there is a scrolling LED display underneath to broadcast news of school events or information for parents.
The name of the school, etched on a large plaque with letter coloring contrasting with the background makes for a very worthy sign. If the school has a crest or other emblem, space on the sign should be reserved for this too.
The sign, of course, will be standing in all weathers and needs to be durable. While there is a choice of base materials available, metal signs are popular. Aluminum and stainless steel are strong, durable materials for both the plaque and posts. Usually these are painted in colors related to the school, with the lettering sprayed or painted in a contrasting color. A good sign maker works with school staff throughout the design process. Once the sign is complete, he will install it within the grounds.
A school may not be selling physical products but it is selling the hopes of parents for their children. A well-designed and attractive school sign speaks volumes about the quality of teaching behind the walls. Just as the building and the grounds are kept carefully maintained, so should your outdoor school sign. A little care helps build confidence in the school as the place to send kids for a great education. Add an LED scrolling display and parents are kept informed of school developments when they drop their kids off in the morning.
