Statistics show that a high percentage of illness is related to stress. Stress, especially long term stress, can cause serious health problems. And recently, researchers are discovering that our hearts can literally get broken by high, emotional stressors. 

What are high emotional stressors? It can be things like a sudden loss of a loved one, being fired from a job, experiencing immediate danger like a natural disaster or car accident, or dealing with domestic violence. Research is showing that these sorts of experiences flood the heart with stress hormones like adrenaline.

“Broken heart syndrome” is a common term for stress-induced cardiomyopathy. It’s a condition that affects the heart’s muscle tissue. The research shows how our emotions can kill us. The good news is that people who experience this condition, usually don’t have any heart disease symptoms before they’re diagnosed. Interestingly though, more than 90 percent of cases are in women from the ages of 58 to 75. More good news is that most people affected quickly recover with no lasting damage to their heart. 

The message I wanted to convey to you is to take care of your emotional health. Seek help if you’re feeling overwhelmed or have experienced a traumtic event. If you don’t know where to begin, here are some resources.

  2. Meditation Tool: My clients really like this biofeedback, meditation tool from Heartmath.org. The tool is called Inner Balance and it helps you move from emotional instability to balance. It creates what’s called heart coherence. This state improves your physical, emotional and mental body. The Heart Math website is loaded with scientific studies validating the power of the heart to heal. My clients love this tool, because it helps them know that they’re getting the benefits from the meditation. Most people know mediation is really good for them but they give up, because they don’t know whether they’re doing it correctly. This tools provide the training a feedback that you’re on the right track.
