Are water puddles or moisture damaging your wooden floors? Take immediate measures before the issue exacerbates. While wood is among the most durable building materials, exposure to moisture and excessive humidity makes it highly vulnerable to rotting, cracking, or warping. To protect your wooden furniture and surfaces from water, you need to implement effective waterproofing methods. Here are some tips to protect wooden surfaces from water:Waterproof Wood Waterproof Wood Using Sealants Wood Sealants are extremely useful in protecting wood from moisture. Visit the nearest home improvement store and look for products labeled Stain Sealer or Water Sealer. Some are also named by the product type they’re designed for such as Furniture Sealant, Floor sealant, etc. Before applying the sealant on wood surfaces, remove any previous sealant using sandpaper. Then, under suitable humidity and temperature conditions, apply the first coat of sealant and let it dry for the prescribed drying time suggested on the product packaging. Depending on the type of wood you’re applying it on, you’ll need to apply a varying number of coats. For instance, some hardwoods require only one coat, while softwoods need 2 or 3 coats at minimum. Now let the wood cure for several days. Applying sealant once every few years should be sufficient. Apply Appropriate Waterproofing Oil Certain types of oil demonstrate incredible performance in protecting wood surfaces from water. The three most common types of waterproofing oils include linseed, tung, and walnut oils. Oil should be used for smaller wood-based projects such as countertops, cutting boards, tables, etc, while sealants are more feasible for large projects. Create a mixture of oil, apple cider vinegar, and turpentine. Preparing a mixture isn’t a must but many experts recommend the same. Before applying the oil, prepare the wood surface by rubbing away any scraps with a dry cloth and sanding the wood surface with a fine-grit sandpaper. Then, apply the first coat of oil and let the surface dry for at least 30 minutes before wiping with a clean cloth to remove excess oil. Let it dry for 24 hours and apply two more oil coats. Keep in mind that the oil waterproofing process takes longer than the sealant process. Finally, let it cure for a few days or weeks before you start using it. Use Stain-Sealant Combos If you’re short on time or are dealing with a large project, it makes sense to use a stain-sealant combo. This versatile product not only offers outstanding water resistance, but it also adds color to the wooden surfaces. Stain-sealants contain water, oil, or alkyd-concentrated color pigments, based on which the resultant surfaces can be opaque, transparent, or a mix of both. For maximum protection, you will need to apply the product once every year. If your wooden floor, furniture or any other surface has been damaged by water or is infected by mold, consider seeking the Service Team of Professionals.
