Are you looking for ways to protect your furnace from water damage? Experiencing water damage in your home is inconvenient for many different reasons. First of all, water damage leaves unpleasant stains on the walls and flooring of a home which results in the need for expensive renovation to fix the interior design. Moreover, water damage inside a home can also cause harm to the electrical appliances in it. When water comes into contact with electrical appliances, it can easily ruin the circuit boards and other sensitive components inside the machine. One electrical appliance that is at high risk of getting damaged by water is the furnace that heats water in your home.   Inspect Your Furnace Regularly Furnaces are usually placed in hidden areas of a home such as basements, mechanical closets or crawl spaces. These places of a home are not frequently used or inspected and this is why water damage to furnaces can often stay undetected for long periods of time.  One simple way to prevent water damage to your furnaces is to make an effort to inspect them regularly. If you see any signs of water leak near your furnace then you should call a plumber to check and repair this problem immediately. By inspecting your furnace regularly, you will be able to identify the problem earlier and this will help to minimize the damage to your furnace. Elevated Height Place the Furnace at an Elevated Height Another simple way to prevent water damage to your furnace is to place the furnace at an elevated height. If you create an elevated platform for your furnace to be placed on, it won’t get exposed to the water gathered on the floor and this will help to reduce the chances of it getting damaged by water. If you have placed your furnace in a mechanical closet, you can simply place it on top of a wooden box to give it some extra height. If your furnace is installed in the unfinished basement, then you can use concrete to create an elevated height. Install Water Sensors Near Your Furnace Another smart way to protect your furnace from water damage is by installing water sensors near it. The water sensors will ring an alarm or give you a notification on your cell phone to inform you about any water leaks in that space. As a result, you can quickly turn off the water supply to stop water from gathering near your furnace and call a plumber to repair the problem. Replace Your Furnace if it Gets Damaged by a Flood The damage caused to a furnace due to basement flooding depends on two main things; the depth of the water gathered near the furnace and the duration of exposure to water. In most cases, the water damage on furnaces from basement flooding is so harsh that the furnace has to be replaced for safety reasons. Gas furnaces have many built-in valves and other controls that usually stop functioning properly when they get exposed to water. Faulty valves negatively impact the performance of the furnace and it stops working overtime. Even when valve failure does not occur in a furnace after basement flooding, the interior of the unit slowly starts to rust. This is why it’s always better to replace a furnace after basement flooding. Please visit our website for more information on water damage restoration.
