Overview of Channel Letter Signs and Installation

BY: Your Name, Your Business

Custom channel letter signs are a great way to make a big impact on your business’s presence. Whether you’re a small business or a large corporation, channel letter signs can create an eye-catching display that will draw attention.

But what types of channel letter signs are available? Our sign shop is here to break down the different types of custom channel letter signs we install, so you can find the perfect sign to fit your needs.

What are Channel Letter Signs?

Channel letters are illuminated letter signs made of aluminum, stainless steel, or acrylic. They are commonly seen displaying business names on storefronts. They are made from a translucent front panel, an aluminum or stainless-steel return, and a lighting element.

There are four types of custom channel letters: front-lit, back-lit, combination-lit, an open-face.

Front-Lit Channel Letters

As the most common type of channel letters, front-lit letters are made from an acrylic front panel and an aluminum frame. A front-facing internal lighting element allows light to shine through the front panel, illuminating the characters.

Back-Lit Channel Letters

Back-lit letters are identical to front-lit letters, except the lighting element is mounted on the rear of the sign, illuminating the lettering from behind. This creates a glow or “halo” effect around the letters.

Combination-Lit Channel Letters

As you can imagine, combination-lit letters combine front-lit and back-lit elements. The lighting elements are designed to allow light through the translucent front panel and out the back. This creates a halo effect around the lettering while illuminating the front panels.

Open-Face Channel Letters

This style of channel letter is unique. It uses the return and the lighting elements but does not have a front panel. This gives the sign a cool, retro look as the lighting elements are exposed.

How are Channel Letters Installed?

Installation of channel letters will vary based on the style of the sign. However, here are the most common installation methods:

  • Raceway: The letters are mounted on rigid steel bars connected with a metal wire known as a raceway. The bars and wire are installed directly into the building surface, while the letters are assembled and installed on the raceway. This is the best installation method for back-lit and combination-lit letters.
  • Stand-offs: The letters are affixed to the building with metal stand-offs. These allow a couple of inches between the sign and the building, giving the sign a more intense 3D look.
  • Flush Mounted: Letters can also be mounted directly to a building surface using adhesive. This is a great option for open-faced channels since the exposed lighting elements add a cool retro look and glow effect.
