If so, it’s important to be familiar with sign regulations that apply to your construction site.

When it comes to construction, there are specific rules in place governing the size, placement, and content of signage. In this guide, we’ll provide an overview of what you need to know before putting up a sign on your worksite. Stay safe and in compliance with the law by familiarizing yourself with these regulations!

Construction Site Sign Regulations

The Hamilton County Board of Commissioners has enacted regulations governing the use of custom construction site signs. These regulations are intended to protect the public health, safety and welfare, and to promote the orderly and aesthetic development of Hamilton County.

All custom construction signs must be:

  • A maximum of 32 square feetin size for office, commercial, or manufacturing zone district, and 20-9 square feet for agricultural or residential zone district.
  • Painted on both sides
  • Erected no more than 14 days prior to the commencement of construction and removed within 14 days after the completion of construction
  • Located on the building site and set back a minimum of five feet from all property lines
  • No more than six feet above ground level for office, commercial, or manufacturing zone district, and five feet for agricultural or residential zone district.
  • Illuminated only during the hours of darkness

In addition, all custom construction signs must comply with the following:

  • All signs shall have the name and address of the owner or developer of the property on which the sign is located.
  • No sign shall be located in any public right-of-way.
  • No sign shall obstruct sight triangles at intersections.
  • Signs shall not be permitted which would create a public nuisance or safety hazard.
  • All signs shall be in good repair and free of graffiti.

In cases where you need to obtain a permit, failing to obtain one is considered as a violation of the Highway Department and can lead to a fine of up to

,500 per day per violation.
