Tactile ADA Signs

Are you wondering if your signs are ADA compliant? Have you ever visited a building and noticed ADA signs that don’t fulfill the required criteria? Probably not! However, keep in mind that fulfilling ADA compliance is not a complex thing to do. In fact, you have to pay attention to a few specific easy-to-follow guidelines to make your signs ADA compliant.

Remember, the onus falls on you as a business owner to ensure that your signage meets ADA requirements. That being said, you also have to ensure that your signs are visible and accessible to people with visual impairments. So, on that note, listed below are a few guidelines you must follow to ensure that your signs follow ADA standards.

Font Size

The standard font size for signs is pretty straightforward. To fulfill ADA font guidelines, characters used in signs must always:

  • Be uppercase
  • Be sans serif
  • Have a height of 51mm maximum and 16mm minimum based on the height of the letter “I” in uppercase
  • Be selected from fonts with 110% maximum height of the letter “I” in uppercase
  • Be selected from fonts with 55% minimum height of the letter “O” in uppercase

Character Size

Characters with a maximum height of 2 inches and a minimum height of 5/8 inches are applicable for tactile signs. This guideline is typically broken down when your sign design cannot accommodate both compliant tactile and braille characters.

However, this rule is not strictly followed for dual message signs. In that case, the characters used in dual message tactile signs can be ½ inches high.

Kerning

Kerning is the amount of space you leave between each character on your sign. However, the ADA rules for spacing are pretty strict. Typically, you can only have a character spacing of 1/8 inches between every consecutive character. If you exceed this, your sign won’t be considered ADA compliant.

However, this is more complicated because some characters naturally have less spacing between them. So, to fulfill ADA spacing guidelines, you must ensure that every character is spaced 1/8 inches apart.

ADA Braille Guidelines

In the United States of America, signs must follow the Grade II Braile standard. This means your sign must include short-form words and 189 contractions.

For example, the Title 24 standard requires you to create signs that have Braille contractions at least 3/8 inches below their corresponding words. Furthermore, the spacing between Braille contractions should be no more than ½ inches. Otherwise, your sign wont be ADA compliant!
