Leaders are not born, they are made in time through practice and honing of essential skills which can help someone get the most out of the people they are overseeing. In the business world, a leader must have a few important skills and, perhaps most importantly, have the desire to lead others.
As a business coach with years of experience in the corporate world, both as a successful business person and now as a coach, I have worked with some fantastic leaders and gained a great deal of insight into the things which help someone get the most out of their team members. Now, I share these skills with business owners and leaders to help them reach their goals.
While leadership is part of many of my coaching, I build an entire plan around helping my clients succeed. Many newer business owners are great in their given field, but might not have much experience leading a team. If you can relate, this article is for you and I hope it gives you some insight into how a business coach can help hone your leadership skills.
Communicate Effectively
A leader must be an effective communicator because it’s up to them to share the vision they have for the company, get people to buy in and also to make sure everyone understands their responsibilities and how they tie into the overall goal. In order to be a great communicator, a person must learn to listen. While it might seem counterintuitive, leaders who communicate well are the ones who listen to their people and then choose their words carefully in response. What you will find if you come to a conversation with a message to spread, but instead listen first rather than speak, your people will tell you what they need to hear, and then you can meet their needs. We cover how to listen to best communicate and how to speak clearly and concisely in my training sessions.
Delegate Properly
If you’re the person doing the work on the ground yourself day in and day out, you can’t effectively also be the leader of a company. While you should be willing to jump in and help and train when needed, a leader must see the big picture and move the company forward. For this reason, I train people to delegate effectively and free themselves up to lead the company. Great leaders know how to equip their people to succeed, clearly communicate what must be done and follow up to ensure the task is complete.
Lead with Confidence
Leaders don’t have to be loud and boisterous to effectively manage a team. Ultimately, you will lead best when you are being yourself, and I work on a one on one level to help my clients find the best leadership style to meet their personality. When you can be yourself and you have the right skills, you can lead confidently and inspire your people to perform their best.
