Few people get as excited about the holidays as your kids. Those bright-eyed, sugar filled youngsters are just bursting with excitement about the lights, the Christmas tree and of course the presents. But choosing beautiful Christmas decorations that will hold up to your active family and more importantly aren’t dangerous to your children can be difficult. You want kid-friendly décor that doesn’t leave your home looking like a kindergarten classroom.

Here are some tips that we at Christmas Tree Pros TN use in our own busy homes to keep the Christmas spirit alive for our young families:

1. Organize your tree ornaments by durability: You don’t have the buy all new ornaments to make your tree kid-friendly. Put glass ornaments and small ornaments that could be choking hazards on upper branches with the less fragile ornaments near the bottom. There are some great-looking felt ornaments that hold up to grabs and tumbles with the best of them. No doubt your kids have some home-made ornaments as well. Put those at their eye level, so they can admire their masterpieces. Also, make sure lights are strung on interior branches rather than at the tips where they can easily be pulled.

2. Avoid fake snow and other artificial products: If you have a toddler, you know they’ll put just about anything in their mouths. Avoid decorating with fake snow, which can cause stomach problems even if it’s non-toxic, and tinsel, which is a choking hazard. You may also want to throw out those old fake trees that were made in China and keep certain painted decorations out of reach. These can contain unsafe levels of lead, some of it in the form of dust, which can be dangerous if handled, let alone consumed.

3. Pick the “right” natural products:Of course, there are dangerous natural products too, such as mistletoe, which is toxic if swallowed. If you decide to hang mistletoe, make sure it’s hung high and secured so it won’t accidently fall or get tugged down. If you decorate with pinecones or nuts, make sure to keep them out of reach, as they can be choking hazards. A fun project to do with your kids is to make orange pomanders, which will make the house smell delicious! More good news? Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are not poisonous to humans.
