NAPLES, FL | Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Sign Requirements | Sign Shop…

BY: Your Name, Your Business

As a business owner, you’re probably aware that any area open to the public requires signage that complies with the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

While it may seem inconvenient to follow these guidelines, it is critical that public buildings be readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities. All publicly accessible buildings must adhere to all rules and regulations set forth by the ADA. Neglecting to do so can result in non-compliance, which is generally punishable through a large fine.

The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design can be confusing. However, there are some tips you can follow to remain compliant:

  • ADA-compliant signs are required in all permanent public spaces, which is defined as any area that will retain the same function 7 or more days.
  • If this publicly accessible area is only for temporary use – seven days or less – the ADA signage is not required by law.
  • ADA-compliant signs are also required for any area of a building pertaining to safety. For example, you should place the required signs next to stairwells, fire exits, elevators, and escalators.

Does Every Room Need ADA Signs?

As noted above, permanent and public spaces require ADA-compliant signs. Examples of rooms that require signage include (but are not limited to):

  • Conference rooms
  • Storage rooms
  • Break rooms
  • IT rooms
  • Restrooms
  • Kitchens
  • Mechanical rooms
  • Utility rooms
  • Stairwells
  • Offices

As noted by Section 216.2 of the ADA, signs must provide names, designations, or labels for any rooms where the sign is likely to remain the same for more than seven days.

If you aren’t sure if a room requires an ADA sign, in general, you should err on the side of caution. Even a minor, first-time infraction comes with significant penalty fees. Thus, it is always better to have an extra sign than to be missing even one required sign. Not only does the signage help those with disabilities, but they also protect you against non-compliance and associated penalties.

Once you understand which ADA signs you should have in your building, you also need to follow the rules and guidelines for where these signs are hung. Installation guidelines are very specific for ADA compliant signs, and these rules must be followed to avoid penalties and fines. Spectrum Signworks is experienced in both manufacturing and installing ADA compliant signs and can guide you through your next ADA sign project.
