Did you know that there are different types of fire extinguishers? Read on to find out! Even though all fires can be pretty frightening and scarring, they all have different heat sources, fuels, and chain reactions. This is why you can’t fight every fire with the same fire extinguisher; you need different types of fire extinguishers for different classes of fire. So, here are the different types of fire extinguishers and the fires that they are designed to extinguish:Extinguisher ABC Powder Fire Extinguisher This fire extinguisher is quite multi-purpose, which makes it one of the most readily available and most used extinguishers out there. It’s effective on class A, B, and C fires. It sprays a fine chemical powder that’s mostly made of monoammonium phosphate. It helps blanket the fire, which suffocates and burns it out. Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher This is one of the cleanest types of fire extinguishers out there as it leaves behind no residue, which means it doesn’t require any cleanup. As the name suggests, the CO2 extinguisher extinguishes CO2, which removes the oxygen from the fire and suffocates it. This fire extinguisher is ideal for electrical fires and class B fires that involve combustible liquids. Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher This fire extinguisher is ideal to fight class K fires, which involve cooking media such as vegetable or animal oils and fats. It contains a potassium solution that lunches a twofold attack on such fires. The liquid mist cools the fire and then the solution reacts with the cooking medium and forms a thick soap-like substance, which seals the surface and prevents the fire from reigniting. Water Mist Fire Extinguisher Water mist extinguisher is a pretty versatile fire extinguisher as it uses newer technology that works on most fire classes, such as A, B, and C. It releases microscopic water molecules that are quite effective at fighting the fire in many ways. Firstly, since it disperses a large amount of water in a microscopic fog-like form, it helps decrease the oxygen level in the air, which helps suffocate the fire. Secondly, the water particles cool the fire and reduce its temperature. Lastly, the water that comes out of this extinguisher is de-ionized, i.e., its minerals have been removed, which means that it can be used on electrical fires as well. This is because the de-ionized water will not act as a conductor. Foam Fire Extinguisher Foam fire extinguishers are used to extinguish class A and B fires, but they’re not effective on gaseous fires. They spray a kind of foam that grows when it hits the air and envelops the fire. This prevents the vapors of the flammable liquids from feeding the fire and cutting off its fuel supply. Additionally, since the foam is combined with water, it cools the fire. Such a fire extinguisher works best on liquid fires, such as gasoline fire, and wood fires. Clean Agent Fire Extinguisher  This fire extinguisher is a type of gaseous fire suppression system. It’s stored in liquid form and turns into its gaseous form when it is sprayed. The gas is non-conductive and safe to use. It stays in the atmosphere for a pretty short time and leaves no residue, which makes it eco-friendly. This gas extinguishes fires by decreasing the oxygen levels and hindering the chain reaction. Since this gas is eco-friendly, clean, and non-conductive, it’s perfect to use in rooms that are filled with computer and electrical equipment. These fire extinguishers are used to extinguish class B and C fires. Since fires and some fire extinguishers can leave behind various residues that require proper cleanup, it’s always better to hire a professional fire damage restoration company than to clean up your property on your own.
