People view the term accountability as a negative in the business world, but smart owners, executives and managers can help turn accountability into a driving force for reaching the company’s goals and keeping people motivated.

As a business coach in the Louisville, Kentucky area, I have a great deal of experience working with some top performing companies and others which needed a lot of help. I can assist in many facets of business operation, but in many cases helping establish a company culture of accountability is a great first step in the right direction.

Accountability hinges on the establishing, education and pursuit of your company’s goals. Without concrete goals in mind for your company and a clear vision of everyone’s role in reaching them, there can be no accountability from your team members.

Once you know where you want your business to go, it’s important to determine what role people will play to help the company get there. You can’t just expect people to understand how they fit into the important goal, you must define a role for them which makes sense with their skillset and the vision of the company.

Great leaders are often fantastic communicators, so rather than making accountability a negative, they stress the importance of this unique role for each person to the overall success of the team. So many employees go to work every day and think they are on an island, as if their performance doesn’t impact anyone else, but this is almost never the case.

By explaining how a person’s role helps their co-workers to get their jobs done and in turn, helps the company reach its overall goals, accountability changes from something which is feared to something which binds the team together. When a person is working for the good of their co-workers and doesn’t want to let them down, it adds another layer of motivation to their everyday job duties.

If accountability is lacking in your workspace, try to be more transparent about company goals and give people clear roles in how they can help you reach them. Once these are established, accountability becomes more natural and is easier to track, and your company can reach new heights.

If you need expert assistance with accountability or any business process, I can help. Contact me today to learn more about business coaching and its potential impact on your company.

Everybody’s got to be accountable or your business will not go very far. You as an individual have to be accountable to yourself, you have to be accountable to your family members, have to be accountable to your neighbors, you have to be accountable to your bosses and your co-workers at work; everybody has to be accountable in life or people will struggle in life. So, where does accountability come in? Because, if you’ve identified everything in discipline number one that’s your wildly important goals, and you’ve been able to break those down down to the work center level in employees and teams at the department level know exactly what they’re doing to contribute to those wildly important priorities and goals, that’s critical.
