Personal Leadership: Understanding Your Team

BY: Your Name, Your Business

In a recent podcast episode, esteemed business coach Jason Ballard discusses the vital role of personalized leadership in enhancing team motivation and performance. Known for his expertise in assisting professionals across the globe to reach their personal and business goals, Ballard brings an interesting perspective on leadership for the year 2023.

Ballard starts by acknowledging everyone has a story, aspirations, fears, and constraints. He highlights that every person desires to grow, improve, and be part of something unique while also battling with challenges holding them back. As per Ballard, these human aspects are pivotal points of engagement for leaders to motivate their teams.

The crux of his message lies in the importance of understanding these individual narratives. To effectively motivate, encourage, and empower team members, Ballard advises leaders to know their people better. He goes a step further to suggest leaders in 2023 should aim to understand their team members on a deeper, more personal level.

The knowledge Ballard refers to is not restricted to professional competencies or performance metrics. He encourages leaders to familiarize themselves with the personal aspects of their team members’ lives. Knowing their pets’ names, their children’s names or their personal goals and aspirations can significantly enhance the leader-employee relationship.

Leaders can make their team members feel valued and understood by taking an interest in what’s important to their team members and where they want to steer their careers. This level of personalization fosters a deeper connection, ultimately leading to increased motivation, improved performance, and overall employee satisfaction.

In summary, Ballard’s message for leaders in 2023 revolves around personalized leadership, where understanding the personal narratives of team members becomes a strategic leadership approach. By knowing their people better, leaders can unlock new levels of motivation and growth within their teams. This perspective offers a fresh outlook on leadership, emphasizing the power of personal connections in creating a motivated, engaged, and high-performing team. The key takeaway is clear: to lead effectively, leaders must understand their team members not just as employees but as individuals with unique stories and aspirations.

Everybody has somebody, and everybody has a story. Everybody wants to be better; everybody wants opportunities in the world. Everybody wants to improve, everybody wants to grow, and everybody wants to be part of something special.

But everybody has a story. Everybody has constraints and fears and worries and things that hold them back. And so, to motivate people, to encourage them, and empower them, you have to get to know them. I would encourage all leaders to get to know your people better.

In 2023, make it your goal to get to know your people better this year, even on more of a personal level. Their dog names, their kids’ names, what kind of things they’ve got going on in their lives, and what some of their goals and aspirations are as individuals.

What’s important for them? Where do they want to go in their careers?
