Make sure you and your employees are covered

Small business owners are usually great at what they do. Whether it be providing an exceptional service or making a quality product, new entrepreneurs typically have a great understanding of their craft.

What many small business owners aren’t as great at are the many administrative tasks which come with running a business. Things like payroll, human resources and other tasks don’t help increase profits, but they’re absolutely necessary for the business to succeed.

One common area small business owners sometimes don’t understand as well as they could is workers’ compensation. Workers’ comp is an important part of ensuring your business is covered in the event of an emergency and we’ll cover some of the basics in today’s article.

Our company is based in the Bay Area and we’re specialists in handling the administrative tasks which often overrun small businesses, so the owners can focus on their actual products and services.

In addition to payroll services, human resources assistance and time and attendance solutions, we specialize in providing workers’ comp to our small business partners.

You may not know this, but workers’ comp is a type of insurance policy the employer pays for. If you have employees and don’t yet have workers’ comp in place, you could be leaving yourself exposed to a great deal of liability (and in California, it’s a legal requirement for all employers to have workers’ comp insurance).

The workers’ comp insurance policy is in place to provide wages and medical care for employees if they’re injured while on the job. When an employer has a workers’ comp policy in place, the employee loses the right to sue the employer in the event of an injury occurring while they’re on the job.

Under a workers’ comp policy, the employee who is hurt on the job receives coverage for their injury no matter who was at fault. Even if the injury was caused by negligence of the employee, they’re still covered.

Under workers’ comp laws, it’s also illegal for the company to retaliate against an employee who has a workers’ comp issue. This is true even if the employer believes the injury didn’t happen at the workplace and the employee disagrees.

While all workers’ comp policies cover employees of a business, even independent contractors who are working on a jobsite can be eligible for workers’ comp coverage.

In California, the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California has a website which allows anyone to obtain the workers’ comp insurance provider for any company in the state.

If you have further questions about workers’ comp laws and how these insurance policies work, we have years of experience helping companies in San Ramon and the surrounding areas and would love to help answer any questions you might have.

Whether it’s workers’ comp or payroll, HR, etc.; if you’re tired of dealing with external factors instead of running your business, we would be happy to help you take back control of your company. Give us a call today!
