Mold Inspection

Want to prevent mold growth in electrical appliances? Keep reading for tips on how to remove mold.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mold can grow on anything that has moisture. Since many of your appliances work with water, mold could be growing inside them without you even knowing it. Among the most common reasons for mold growth in electrical appliances include clogged drains, water leaks, poor ventilation, and even user error.

Here are some expert tips to prevent mold growth in electrical appliances:

Washing MachineDishwasher

It might come as a surprise that your laundry room can be a breeding ground for mold. The pile of dirty clothes, combined with some moisture, makes for a perfect environment for mold growth. To protect your washing machine from mold invasion, consider doing your laundry every day so that dirty clothes don’t remain on the floor for days.

After washing your clothes, immediately put them for drying. Once you’re done using the washer, keep its door or lid open to allow for proper ventilation in the machine. Refer to the washing machine’s manual and clean it regularly according to the instructions.

Refrigerator

The last thing you’d want is to have mold in your refrigerator, an appliance that stores the food you eat. Effective cleaning can prevent mold growth in the refrigerator. Remove all drawers, butter compartments, trays, and egg containers, and clean everything thoroughly.

You can use vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to clean and keep your refrigerator mold-resistant. Don’t forget to clean the door creases using a small scrub brush or toothbrush. After cleaning, dry the trays, shelves, and compartments before closing the doors.

If you see small pieces of food inside the refrigerator or in case of any spillage, clean the surfaces as soon as possible. Any soda or juice spills shouldn’t be left to crusty or they will lead to mold growth.

AC Vents

Mold can even grow on air ducts due to condensation. This is often referred to as ductwork sweating, which results from the presence of cold air inside the duct. To prevent moisture and mold issues on AC vents, look for visual signs of mold or use your nose to sense any musty odor near it. While cleaning them from time to time shouldn’t allow mold growth, if you detect serious mold issues that might have spread to other areas, seek professional mold remediation services.

Dishwasher

The filter, interior panels, door gasket, and silverware basket are a few areas mold can hide in your dishwasher. The problem most commonly occurs due to damp food particles that are left behind after a cycle.

Use diluted bleach to clean the interior and the gasket. Regardless of its condition, clean the gasket once a week and run an empty cycle. Leverage the heat-dry function and leave the door open for a while after every use. Keep a check on the filter and the silverware basket too.

If you detect mold issues in any of the electrical appliances discussed above or in other parts of your home, seek professional help.
