Langhorne, PA – 5 Common Causes of Roof Fires | Fire Restoration News

BY: Your Name, Your Business

Have you ever thought about the causes of roof fires? Here are a few of them.

Most homeowners are so busy preventing water damage and mold growth that they tend to ignore the fire hazards hovering right above their heads. Roof fires are extremely dangerous, and must not be underestimated or ignored. Studies have shown that roofs are the primary contributors to most house fires. In this article, we shall highlight the five main reasons behind roof fires.

4. Roof Materials

  1. Poor Electrical Wiring

Some of the most common causes of house fires are faulty wiring, malfunctioning electrical outlets, and appliances. Cases of fire hazards are more common during colder months when heating appliances and lighting are used more frequently. In most roof fires, the main culprits are attic wiring and light fixtures. Most roof fires take place because of burnt wires, which often remain unnoticed. Another source of a roof fire is a loose electrical connection.

  1. Insulation in the Ceiling

To be honest, insulation alone is not the main cause behind a roof fire. In reality, poor and faulty wiring when combined with existing insulation can result in a bad rood fire. Research shows that roofing material with insufficient insulation around the areas with vent pipes result in roof fires. With time, the roofing materials are damaged by heat from these pipes. When the winds are strong, the heat can result in a fire. Also, the insulation must never be applied to close to the source of heat.

  1. Roof Leakage

Never make the mistake of ignoring a roof leak. A leaky roof results in water damage, which can surprisingly result in a fire hazard. Furthermore, roof leakage can also affect the wiring in the roof, and can sometimes shorten the wiring. The wires that are protected by junction boxes are not 100% safe either. A leaky roof allows water to enter and compromise the hinges of the junction boxes, and also insulation clamps. Water coming in contact with a live wire can ignite a spark, which can start a fire in no time.

  1. Roofing Materials

All roofing materials are designed differently  Some of them are more flammable than others. Untreated woods can act as tinder, and can easily catch fire. To avoid this occurrence, use A-rating metal tiles or sheets on your roof. Also, metal sheets must be combined with high-quality fireproof underlayment.

  1. Dirty Chimney

Another common mistake made by homeowners is neglecting to clean the chimney of their house.  A burning fireplace creates in a layer of flammable material inside the chimney known as creosote. The slightest spark can cause the creosote to catch fire. To ensure safety, make sure to invest in regular chimney cleaning. Also, it is a good idea to install a spark arrestor in the chimney.

Fire hazards are far more dangerous than mold and mildew growth. Not only are they life-threatening, but they often do not allow victims the time they need to escape.
