When to replace old Building Signs.
There comes a time when signs need to be replaced. Depending on the materials used, outside walls signs last between 5 to 15 years with channel letters lasting the longest since they are made from aluminum. However, the front face of channel letter signs are painted, or they use either acrylic or a translucent vinyl depending if it is a lighted sign or not.
The most common building wall sign that companies use to indicate their presence is made with an acrylic face and a foam backer. The foam is high density construction type foam, suitable for mounting on buildings and stand up well to weathering over several years.
All signs will age over time.  Acrylic and foam will typically last 8 years. Foam edges can be painted with a mix of stucco which will extend its life by 2 to 3 years. Any sign that is painted will need a new coat after 10 years. A sign using a digital print to produce a mix of colors, when laminated and typically seen in company logos and icons, will last 4 to 7 years depending on the quality of materials used.
The Village Investments sign, shown below, lasted 20 years before being replaced, which was probably 5 years overdue. Sign materials used included a white acrylic face on white foam with a laminated digital print for the company logo.
Our recommendation is to think about repainting, refurbishing or even replacing your sign after 10 years. Your sign is a reflection of your business, and your brand identity works to promote your quality products and services. A great looking sign showing no signs of wear and tear is an important asset to your business.
