What are the Benefits of Delta 8 THC?

Another compound called Cannabidiol (or CBD) has been making headlines in the last few years. This cannabinoid provides a multitude of medicinal benefits with no psychoactive effect. Since CBD does not induce euphoria, “it is an attractive option for patients seeking relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms, and other conditions without disconcerting feelings of lethargy or dysphoria,” according to Project CBD.

But there’s another cannabinoid that’s flying under the radar that few people talk about, not even expert tokers. It is called Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, or Delta-8-THC, one of the more than 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants.

Let’s take a look at the proven and potential benefits of delta-8 THC and what it could do for you as a patient.

  • Research Shows Cancer-fighting properties

It has long been assumed that cannabis could play an active role in the fight against cancer, and there are studies that have supported this theory since the 1970s. One of the only studies on delta-8 as a cancer treatment occurred back in 1974, with government researchers using mice infected with lung cancer to try to determine if delta-8 was harmful to the immune system.

An unexpected discovery occurred during the study, however, after researchers realized that mice who had been treated with delta-8 THC for a period of 20 days had actually reduced tumor sizes. Researchers also found that survival time had increased when mice were treated with delta-8 THC for cancer. Unfortunately, any further research on the subject was limited in the decades after the 1974 cannabis legal status study in the U.S., but there is still plenty of reason to believe that delta-8 could be a weapon in the fight against cancer. After all, the National Cancer Institute reported that delta-8 THC, delta-9 THC, and CBD were all shown to be capable of stopping tumor growth.

  • Appetite stimulating properties

Delta-8 has also been shown to have appetite-stimulating properties (which is unlikely to surprise anyone who has used cannabis in the past, whether recreationally or medically). Researchers found in a 2004 study by Avraham et al. that rodents treated with low doses of delta-8 THC had appetites that were stimulated more than those treated with delta-9 THC, the most commonly known of which is cannabis cannabinoid.

  • Anti-anxiety properties

Delta-8 may also have a role to play as an anti-anxiety drug. Medications that inhibit anxiety are referred to as anxiolytics, and delta-8 THC is categorized as an “analog of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties”—meaning that NIH considers this cannabinoid to have anti-anxiety properties (among others). Delta-8 is also much less likely to induce high-dose anxiety than its more widely known counterpart, delta-9 THC. Research has shown that delta-8 has less psychoactive power than its analog delta-9, and also appears to offer a more clear-minded experience with less anxiety.

  • Antiemetic properties

Anecdotal evidence has long led cannabis users to believe in the anti-emetic properties of the plant, but it was backed up by scientific research that took place in Israel in 1995. As part of a research project on the anti-emetic properties of cannabis, Israeli researchers administered delta-8 to pediatric cancer patients suffering from chemotherapy-related nausea. What they found was that the nausea of the patients was dramatically cured, with a 100% success rate over 480 treatments—and with negligible side-effects (including psychoactive effects).

The U.S. government also has a patent on the anti-emetic use of delta-8, which furthers the idea that delta-8 can help reduce nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. As part of the research on one of the cannabinoid patents, delta-8 THC has been shown to be 200 percent more effective as an antiemetic compared to Delta-9.
