“Popcorn lung” is another term for bronchiolitis obliterans (BO), a rare disease that results from lung damage to narrow airways. BO was found when popcorn factory employees began to get sick. The culprit was diacetyl, a food additive used to mimic the taste of butter in microwave popcorn.
Diacetyl is also applied to the flavored e-liquid to improve the taste. Diacetyl inhalation causes inflammation and can lead to permanent scarring in the smallest divisions of the airways — the popcorn lung — which makes breathing difficult. Popcorn lung has no long-term cure. There are, however, therapies that control symptoms of BO, such as:
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
Unlike classical pneumonia caused by infection, lipoid pneumonia occurs when fatty acids (the building blocks of fat) enter the lungs. Vaping-related lipoid pneumonia is the result of inhalation of oily substances contained in e-liquid, which causes an inflammatory reaction in the lungs. Symptoms of lipid pneumonia include:
- Chronic cough
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing up blood or blood-tinged mucus
