Traditionally, cigarettes are a person’s choice of smoke. However, the launch of items such as vapes, puff bars, e-cigs, juices, and other accessories are making common rounds all over the world. Let’s get one thing straight though, vapes and other similar devices can never replace cigarettes.
To be honest, cigarette smokers and businesses should not feel threatened by the production of steam-related products. People on both sides have perspectives that actually do not have to compete with each other since they are distinct and both satisfying in their own right. Bear in mind, however, that anything in abundance is dangerous, and vapees are no exceptions.
As the vapes are relatively new to the market, a lot of people will have questions. It is only fair that we shed light on some of the advantages you will reap by using these types of items.
Instead of soaking lung tissue with a therapeutic cloud, much like a nebulizer does, the lungs are steaming coats of potentially harmful chemicals. E-liquid concoctions typically contain a combination of flavorings, herbal additives, and nicotine or THC (a chemical in marijuana that causes psychological effects) dissolved in an oily liquid base. Experts assume that some of the vaporized oil components are going deep into the lungs and causing an inflammatory reaction.
Vitamin E is the material at the core of the inquiry. It is also used as an e-liquid thickener and distribution agent. And while it is healthy when taken orally as a supplement or when used on the skin, it is possibly irritant when inhaled. It has been found in the lungs of people with serious vaping-related injury.
Other common substances found in e-liquid or produced when it’s heated up may also pose a risk to the lungs. These include:
- Diacetyl: This food additive, used to deepen e-cigarette flavors, is known to damage small passageways in the lungs.
- Formaldehyde: This toxic chemical can cause lung disease and contribute to heart disease.
- Acrolein: Most often used as a weed killer, this chemical can also damage the lungs.
“Popcorn lung” is another term for bronchiolitis obliterans (BO), a rare disease that results from lung damage to narrow airways. BO was found when popcorn factory employees began to get sick. The culprit was diacetyl, a food additive used to mimic the taste of butter in microwave popcorn.
Diacetyl is also applied to the flavored e-liquid to improve the taste. Diacetyl inhalation causes inflammation and can lead to permanent scarring in the smallest divisions of the airways — the popcorn lung — which makes breathing difficult. Popcorn lung has no long-term cure. There are, however, therapies that control symptoms of BO, such as:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
Unlike classical pneumonia caused by infection, lipoid pneumonia occurs when fatty acids (the building blocks of fat) enter the lungs. Vaping-related lipoid pneumonia is the result of inhalation of oily substances contained in e-liquid, which causes an inflammatory reaction in the lungs. Symptoms of lipid pneumonia include:
- Chronic cough
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing up blood or blood-tinged mucus
