Side effects based on high-dose clinical trials
Since we lack clinical evidence in support of CBD, clinical evidence against CBD also is missing. No definitive significant side effects have arisen from the few clinical trials that have been performed.
The most detailed findings available are focused on the childhood epilepsy medication Epidiolex, the FDA-approved CBD medication. During clinical trials, high daily doses of CBD for 14 weeks were recommended for adolescents between the ages of 2 and 18. For an adult of 150 pounds, the daily doses were equal to 1,360 mg — more than is usually contained in a whole bottle of CBD oil.
These are the side effects they most often experienced:
- Tiredness
- Decreased appetite
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Altered liver enzymes (see the following section for more on liver enzymes)
Such side effects occurred during the first few weeks for most patients, as they were gradually increasing their dose. Usually, the symptoms subsided after their dosage had decreased, so reducing the dose was often a successful way to eliminate unwanted side effects. When you experience either of these side effects on your current CBD drug, you might be experimenting with waiting for it a week, reducing your dosage or testing out a completely new form of medication.
Side effects from dishonest CBD products
Clinical trials provide patients with high-quality, safe drugs that have a consistent amount of CBD. The side effects of Epidiolex are the ones you might expect from a high dose of a very pure drug. On the other hand, since the supplement industry in the US isn’t highly controlled, you may encounter very different side effects if you buy CBD from deceptive or potentially dangerous manufacturers. In fact, when scientists recently tested a range of CBD products that were publicly available, only 31 percent were labeled correctly.
What can these unreliable products contain?
- Pesticides and heavy metals from bad farming practices
- High levels of THC (more than desired)
- Synthetic cannabinoids
- Any kind of contaminants (mold, bacteria, rancidity, etc)
CBD products often don’t produce any CBD at all — in which case you won’t feel any results, either positive or negative. True CBD products are made from hemp plants that can contain trace amounts of THC when extracted during extraction. If a drug has high THC levels, you can experience side effects such as dry mouth, nausea or altered mood and thought. While it’s hard to imagine all the different side effects that you might encounter from tainted or synthetic drugs, the worst consequences of fraudulent CBD drugs may be long-term harm to the body that you won’t feel the side effect immediately.
If you think your current CBD items are free, do yourself a favor and throw them away. CBD oil is a concentrated plant-based extract that reaches your body — at least expect its consistency to be as good as the food you consume.
