What Conditions Is CBD Used For?

Here’s a look at what a number of clinical studies have discovered in recent years regarding the therapeutic use of CBD, including certain diseases and illnesses for which the FDA has licensed CBD products.

  • Pain: According to a study published in Current Neuropharmacology, when CBD enters a family of receptors or cells which receive stimuli, called vanilloid receptors, the interaction results in lower inflammation and rates of pain perception. And a study published in the European Journal of Pain in July 2016 found that CBD could help people suffering from arthritis manage their pain. The animal study investigated whether using a transdermal (skin-related) CBD gel would minimize inflammation and pain signals, and researchers concluded that the topical drug provided relief from pain-related behaviors without evidence of side effects.

  • Anxiety and depression: Hundreds of research have investigated how cannabidiol could be used to treat various neuropsychiatric disorders. One of the most recent, published in Neurotherapeutics in October 2015, concluded that topical CBD has “considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders.” Moreover, a research analysis published in the Journal of the American Society for Experimental NeuroTherapeutics in September 2015 found that “preclinical evidence strongly supports CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders,”.

  • Epilepsy: Anecdotal accounts about the use of CBD as an epilepsy treatment have been around for decades and a number of robust clinical studies tend to support these arguments. One, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May 2018, demonstrated that CBD has been successful in reducing the number of seizures in people with a type of epilepsy called Lennox – Gastaut syndrome (LGS). And the FDA approved an oral formulation of CBD for LGS and another type of epilepsy, named Dravet syndrome in 2018.

  • Symptoms related to cancer treatment: In cancer care, the emphasis on CBD was on its use in reducing nausea and vomiting that frequently accompanied chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The FDA has licensed two cannabinoid medications to battle certain side effects: Marinol (dronabinol) and Cesamet (nabilone). More recently, according to the American Cancer Society, researchers have discovered that CBD can slow the growth of cancer cells.

  • Acne and other skin issues: A research published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation in July 2014 indicated topical CBD may be a potent antiacne agent, possibly due to its anti-inflammatory properties. And a report published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in July 2017 found CBD (and THC) useful for reducing the eczema and psoriasis associated with itch and inflammation.

  • High blood pressure: Scientists in England researched the impact of CBD on a small group of healthy people between the ages of 19 and 29 — all non-smokers who had never used cannabis — and found a single dose of CBD decreased blood pressure by 6 millimeters of mercury (mmHg), which could potentially also lower the risk of strokes. The study, published in JCI Insight in July 2017, concluded that the response could be due to the anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and analgesic (pain-reducing) effects of CBD.

  • Addiction: As strange as it sounds, CBD — which is legally listed by the Drug Enforcement Administration as a Schedule I drug and as such is actually illegal in almost half of the United States — has shown great promise in the battle against addiction to everything from heroin and cocaine to alcohol and tobacco. Furthermore, a variety of preclinical studies, including a study published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research in June 2017, indicate that CBD may be useful as opioid pain treatment instead.

  • Diabetes: A number of studies, including one published in the American Journal of Pathology in February 2012, indicated that CBD may play a role in improving outcomes for diabetes sufferers. Observational studies have shown that marijuana-using people have lower rates of fasting insulin and insulin resistance tests.
