Braille Signs and the Americans with Disabilities Act
A Braille sign is a sign that is primarily used to provide information to people who are visually impaired. It contains raised bumps or depressions that allow the user to read the information using their hands.
Braille signs are required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for businesses and public places that have public entrances, restrooms, pay phones, and parking spaces. ADA requires all new signs to comply with the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
Requirements for Custom ADA Sign Braille
- The ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) are very specific about what makes a sign compliant with the law. Many states and municipalities have adopted the ADAAG as their building code. In addition to complying with these guidelines, your custom ADA signs need to meet the following requirements:
- Signs must be mounted at eye level so everyone can see them. If a sign is mounted too high or too low, it could cause problems for visually impaired people or limited mobility issues. The sign should also be free from glare and located away from windows, doors, and other light-reflecting surfaces so no one has trouble reading it. Positioning signs on walls or poles further away from walkways will help keep them safe from damage caused by foot traffic.
- Your Braille text must be at least 3/4-inch tall and meet specific spacing guidelines.
- The background color of this example sign is white, and the lettering is black and raised 1/32 inch above the sign’s surface, except for any raised border or background material used under it to provide contrast.
- There should be a 0.059-0.063-inch difference in the diameter of the dot’s base (1.5 to 1.6 mm).
- The sign shall be located in a prominent location that is readily visible to the intended users of the facility. For example, the sign must be installed 48 inches or less above the finished floor.
- The sign shall comply with the technical requirements for accessible signs in Section 703 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
