San Bruno, CA – Evacuation Map Project for Police Credit Union Now Complete

BY: CHERYL ARCHER, SignWorks Inc.

SignWorks  is called upon by many localities to perform site visits, serve as advisors on Evacuation Map Guidelines, as well as fabricating and installing them.  Some Cities have a formal evacuation map program and guidelines like the Cities of San Francisco and Oakland.  Others, like the City of San Bruno, do not have a formal program and instead decides to adopt the guidelines of a neighboring city as was the case with our client in San Bruno.  We followed the guidelines for the City of San Francisco in laying out, fabricating and installing the eight 24” X 15” maps, using non-glare acrylic lens and mounting them at each stairwell and elevator landing on each floor.

Typical evacuation maps will show the egress and not such items as extinguishers, pull stations and the like and will be oriented from the perspective of the viewer.  This is important in the event of a fire because the maps are diagramed to show the most direct exit path from the building in such an emergency.  It is also essential that non-glare acrylic is used as the map cover to ensure the maps are legible even in smoke filled corridors when lighting isn’t optimal.  The pictured maps were installed today.

Located in San Bruno, the Police Credit Union provides banking and loan products, including checking, auto loans and credit cards to police and law enforcement professionals throughout the Bay Area with branches in San Francisco, Pleasanton, San Bruno and Oakland.

We have many other large evacuation map projects in house at the moment including a landmark San Francisco Hotel (183 floor/room maps), a redo of the Epic Charter School maps due to revisions in their floor plan (34 maps) and a San Leandro Apartment Complex with 21 maps, that we are planning to install later today, but more on that later.  We are becoming fairly well known for our work in this area and several other smaller evacuation map projects in house at present.  Our typical process includes a detailed site visit and once approved by the client we will generate paper copies for them to take to the fire department for approval.  Once reviewed we incorporate any necessary edits and fabricate the maps.

Please let us know when (and if) your building requires fire safety signs and/or evacuation maps.  To reach us by phone just call us at (510) 357-2000.   We can offer you the technical advice you need for complying with local guidelines.  Also, feel free to visit our website to look at some of our fire safety and evacuation map project photos and blog posts.
