We are happy to report that our evacuation map project for the Fruitvale Apartment building is finally complete. The client, Lantz Properties, had initially undertaken the project themselves because the building is extremely old and no accurate core drawings existed. After realizing that they needed design help, because the task was much more complex than anticipated, they connected with SignWorks for help in laying out the building core. The project took a little longer because instead of annotating the egress path and placement of the various symbols, the site visit had to be more detailed to encompass the creation of the entire core diagram for each floor. It involved getting accurate measurements by floor, then diagraming the shape and noting standard symbol elements like the egress path, stairs, alarms, extinguishers, etc.
The client chose to manage the evacuation map approval process themselves and we supplied them with the copies they needed. After obtaining approval from the City of Oakland Fire Department and a review of the paper posted maps at the building itself, the fabrication process began. Thankfully only a minor adjustment was needed to one of the maps that involved a change in the orientation. We used non-glare acrylic lens for all eight maps as called for in the guidelines and mounted the vinyl maps to this material using an optically clear adhesive. The 14” X 14” maps and lens were then mounted to a thin PVC backer which made for a professional finished look.
We are delighted to report that the client has entrusted us to work on another of their apartment buildings in Oakland and we are working on getting usable copies of the core drawings for the new project. We have developed lots of experience in interpreting fire safety guidelines, especially in Oakland and San Francisco. That being said, we hope that when and if your building is tagged for fire safety signs or evacuation maps, that you will give us a call at (510) 357-2000. We can provide the technical expertise you need in this area. Just visit our website to peruse some of our evacuation map project photos and blog posts.
