When the Community Resources for Independent Living (CRIL) first contacted us they were thrilled to have been given the opportunity to post two custom aluminum parking signs at a nearby facility. They had a rough outline of what they wanted the sign to say and a logo. Their biggest concern was how long it would take from idea to finished signs. We’re not sure about the actual time constraints but once we were clear on what the signs needed to say we’re proud to say that we produced both 24” X 24”aluminum signs in a day once the art was approved!
The client had originally asked for a non-standard sized aluminum sign blank with a red border and custom text. We recommended switching to a standardized blank sign size featuring the radius corners the client wanted, rather than burdening the client with the cost of a custom sized (.063 aluminum sheeting) material. Sometimes it works in the client’s favor for us to propose an alternative size or material, rather than with the clients’ more customized fabrication features!
This community organization was first organized in 1979 by a small group of disabled individuals wanting to improve the range of choices and support for clients with disabilities in Southern Alameda counties. Based on the model formed by a Berkeley based group promoting consumers living more independently, a similar group was formed. There are now 28 Independent Living Centers (ILCs) in California and 200 throughout the country. Many of the laws regarding Americans with Disabilities (ADA) were promoted and influenced by groups such as these and have resulted in people with disabilities having broader access to buildings, especially those with multiple floors!
