SignWorks, Inc., Hayward, CA, is happy to announce the completion of a sign project that begun with a bid placed more than three years ago. As a subcontractor to Turner Construction on Hawthorne Plaza, 75 Hawthorne Street in San Francisco, SignWorks provided $160,000 in signage for the project over a three-year period.
Turner, founded in 1902, is an international construction company based in New York with 1,500 annual projects totaling $10 billion. Upon being selected as the contractor for the 75 Hawthorne Capital Improvements and Interior Improvements project, Turner began advertising for subcontractors. The small business enterprise, minority-owned and woman-owned business target for the project was 20 percent. Subcontractors were sought for 23 separate construction sectors, including demolition, masonry, furniture rental and signage. Requirements and specifications for the project were provided approximately two months after the project was announced.
Hawthorne Plaza is a two-building office complex with one 20-story building completed in 1987 and a five-story building built in 1910. Hawthorne Plaza was the first multi-tenant office building in San Francisco to earn Gold certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Existing Buildings Rating System, in 2009.
We bid on the project in late 2013, as part of a multi-layered process for qualifying as a subcontractor. A successful sign project bid includes being properly bonded when necessary, insured and, in some cases, certified as a woman-owned or minority-owned business. Once selected as the successful bidder for the project, SignWorks submitted drawings for to be reviewed and approved by the architect, the builder and the city sign permit officials. Upon receiving approval from all officials, the fabrication process was begun in August 2014 and completed in December 2016.
We partnered with wholesale sign manufacturer Identity Group for the interior Braille room number signs required by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and local building codes, directory signs and other interior signs. The final phase of a project this size, correcting any errors or omissions in the number, size, text, location or other sign specifications, was completed in February 2017. One month later, the retention payment (a percentage of the project cost retained until all products are delivered) was released, signifying successful completion of the project.
