One true thing about illuminated cabinet signs – customers often experience sticker shock when they hear the cost of replacing one that’s been in place for a long time. Another truth – outdoor signs are highly custom, one-of-a-kind products built to spec with premium materials that often last for decades. In addition to material cost, the final price includes installation, electrical work and city permit fees. Of course, even when the value is clear, an unexpected expense is not usually welcome or affordable.
When Carl’s Jr.®, downtown Oakland, CA, approached SignWorks, Hayward, CA about raising the height of an existing pylon sign to prevent recurring vandalism, we were happy to oblige with a design proposal and cost estimate. We were just as happy to propose a lower-cost option than elevating the sign above ten feet just to make it harder for vandals to reach. Our more affordable option: replace the vandalized 132”x46” sign faces with two new Lexan polycarbonate panels decorated with the company logo, protected with a graffiti-resistant laminate.
When the solution was agreed upon, Signworks took this project off the store manager’s plate, working directly with the Carl’s Jr. corporate marketing department to secure the logo and specified Pantone® colors and submit proofs. Once approved, we printed the artwork and completed the installation, solving our customer’s original problem of dealing with graffiti that reflected poorly on the business.
Carl’s Jr. started with the American dream of small business ownership when, in 1941, Carl N. Karcher and his wife Margaret borrowed $311 to purchase a hot dog cart. One cart soon grew to four and within five years Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue opened with hamburgers on the menu. Today there are more than 1,100 Carl’s Jr. restaurants worldwide.
