Considered an economy product by some, cut vinyl represents an industry staple and is used across many product categories. It can be used for retail window displays, vehicle and fleet graphics, or used in conjunction with photo realistic images to list a retailer’s specials or service offering directly on walls or windows. The product represents the mainstay of many sign companies, whether used to provide lettering on a lobby sign or wall or when spelling out the businesses name on doors, walls, windows or delivery vehicles. Its uses are vast.
SignWorks has used cut vinyl graphics on many vehicle and fleet projects including fleet graphics for long time repeat clients such as Restoration Hardware, Silman Construction and Richmond based Alion Energy, where we have lettered several pieces of machinery and a large corrugated container.
What is important to note is that cut vinyl or roll sheeting stock comes in a variety of grades. Economy vinyl is produced using a calendared process, while high performance and specialty vinyl is produced using a cast process. Calendared vinyl is typically the more inexpensive of the two PVC based products, but it is less durable and tends to become brittle and fade more quickly when exposed to sunlight. The cast process produces a higher quality vinyl that is more flexible, durable and lasts longer.
High performance specialty cast vinyl is also offered in a variety of finishes, from carbon fiber, several wood grains, chrome, camouflage, metallic and more. In fact, one of the latest is a color changing vinyl that is being used for vehicle wraps. Oh, and don’t forget the matte vinyl’s whether it’s black, white or some other color. One of our favorites was a cut vinyl job we did for Fournee Bakery in Berkeley, using specialty gold leaf vinyl!
