I chuckle sometimes when clients call in and say they need a sign for the exterior of their building.  As a sign manufacture this triggers a host of questions, including what type of sign? Where will the sign be located and what material will the sign be mounted too?  As you can imagine there are some broad categories that we can group these signs into. Fascia Mounted:  This would include dimensional letters and logos consisting of flat cut acrylic, metal and formed/molded plastic in dimensions up to 1” thick.  Direct mounted sandblasted signs could also be mounted to the building fascia or mounted perpendicular to it as is the case for a blade mounted sign.  Illuminated and non-illuminated channel letters, sign cabinets, as well as vinyl graphics on aluminum (and aluminum composite materials) are also options in this category. Post & Panel Signs:    This category consists of ground mounted signs which can be a wood sign erected between posts, sandblasted signs in redwood, cedar or HDU (High Density Urethane).  Aluminum and composites with vinyl graphics of cut vinyl lettering can also be mounted between posts and offer exceptional durability. Monument Signs:  These ground mounted signs are similar to post and panel signs.  Some are masonry or concrete structures, however, our vendor of choice for this category of signs is Peachtree.  They offer an amortized foam type structure in host of variations when it comes to height, width, columns and overall visual aesthetic. Plaques:  This more classic approach to signage includes emblems and dates that are mounted to the building fascia.  They are often used for historical buildings.  We did this for the Atrium Building in Oakland a few years back as the owner wanted the building emblem and year the building was built prominently display at the entrance. In the case of fascia mounted signs we as a sign company will need to know the surface we will be drilling into when we install the signs, including the height above ground where the sign is to be located.  It helps us to know if we will need to order a scissor lift or Boom Truck for the installation.  If the sign is illuminated we will need to know who will be managing the permit process as most cities will require a permit for electrical signs unless only the face of a cabinet sign is being updated.  Many cities require permits for exterior building signs as well, so checking with your city planning department is always a good idea.
