When we were first approached by the Merritt Crest Homeowner Association it was because the Oakland Fire Department required them to update the Evacuation Maps at their facility to comply with fire safety standards. Local fire departments are very specific about their standards and guidelines exist that determine how the information must be displayed on the map including the size of the map area, the symbols that must be used, the orientation of the viewable map area and the use of non-glare acrylic so that in a smoke filled environment the details of the map, when a light is shined on it, is still legible.
Our first step was to confirm what was needed and the quantity of maps necessary to fulfill the fire department’s requirements. This was accomplished by sending a technician to perform a site survey. Maps are generally required at the entrance, at each stairwell and at each elevator. For this particular project a total of nine 14” by 14” maps were required. The large size is a result of the detail that must be displayed and the fact that the map area alone is required to be 12” by 12”.
The pictures above and below show a few of the locations where the maps were located and as you can see the text and map area as well as the symbols are legible. The maps were laid out and two sets of each were printed full size so that the client could take them to the Fire Department for review and approval. Once approved we fabricated the maps, mounting them to clear non glare acrylic and is compliant with Oakland Fire Department guidelines. We also managed the installation process at the client’s facility in Oakland.
The Merritt Crest condominium complex is located close to Lake Merritt and Grand Avenue with great proximity to the local area hot spots.
