We recently finished an interesting engraving project for Pixar Animation studios. It was a small project yet it brought to mind the subtle distinctions between engraving stock and regular PVC sheeting material typically used in sign fabrication. Regular 3 mm PVC generally comes in white but is also available in other colors. The type of stock used in engraving projects will have an exterior color with a white interior core such that when the material is engraved the white core will show through. As shown in the above example.
The other notable difference is that typical engraving stock thicknesses are 1/16” and 1/8”and that there are fewer engraving fonts from which to choose. Engraving is a simple and efficient signage option and in Pixar’s case was used to create 3” by 5” labels for doors and gates at their Emeryville facility. If you have an upcoming facilities signage project, engraving may represent another option for you to explore.
