Coupled with pavement markings regulatory signs are generally associated with traffic and road safety. They tell you about traffic rules, hazards, where you are and/or how to get where you want to go. The shapes and colors of the signs have specific meaning as outlined below in materials taken from the Department of Motor Vehicles:

Regulatory signs can be square, round, rectangular or diamond shaped. Generally the colors are red, white and black (and in the case of disabled parking) will include blue and green. Warning signs are another category of signs that are generally yellow and black and use the diamond, pennant and pentagon shapes. Orange and black diamond and rectangle shaped signs are used in work areas to indicate emergency operations, detours or men working on the roadway. Shield shaped and rectangular signs are generally used as guide signs. Just think of the classic Route 66 shield sign and you will get my meaning. These signs can vary in color but generally they tell you route and highway information that will get you where you want to go.
