LEXAN is my preferred choice for exterior backlit signs. The fact that it will not shatter when rocks are thrown at it make it a clear winner when it comes to backlit signs that are more vandal resistant. The characteristics of this flexible polycarbonate make it ideal for metropolitan environments where the sign cabinet will be lit from behind.
Acrylic is still a great choice for outdoor dimensional letter and logo signs and it can be ordered in a variety of thicknesses to provide additional “pop.” While it is not appropriate for a backlit sign face, it can be used both indoors and out for non illuminated signs. We work with a vendor who provides laser cut acrylic with polished edges that looks like glass, so you can have the look of glass with much better wear characteristics. In fact, we used non-glare acrylic overlays, mounted on stand-offs, for the floor directories on two of our recent building projects.

Another of our vendors offers a frosted acrylic in a variety of colors and hues which can be combined with Braille beading to make tenant identification and facilities signs that are less “bland” than typical ADA signs.
