The sign industry uses a variety of acrylic, plastics or polycarbonate substrates and back plates, so picking the right one with the right wear characteristics is important. While we work much of the time with PVC or acrylic both of these materials are more appropriate for indoor signage. Over time, especially when used outdoors, both will become brittle and susceptible to cracking. Plus, exposure to direct sunlight will cause both to yellow over time. Neither substrate should be used for back-lit signs.
A better choice for exterior back-lit signs is LEXAN. It will not shatter when teenage rock-throwers decide to become adventuresome and your new sign just happens to be in the way. This flexible polycarbonate is thin and light weight; therefore it allows the light to shine through and makes it the perfect choice for illuminated sign cabinets and sign faces.
At SignWorks we advise our customer’s about material selection and function as your trusted adviser so tell us the type of sign you want but be sure to also tell us about how the sign will be used and the type of environment. It will allow us to be more helpful. Call us any time at (510) 357-2000.
