Executives Can Improve Their Leadership Skills
Even if you have been overseeing employees for many years, you can always improve your leadership skills. Some people think leadership is something a person is born with, but in my experience anyone can be an effective leader as long as they want to lead, can practice leadership regularly and have some help learning key skills.
I have worked with many great leaders during my career, first in the corporate world and now as a business coach, and it’s my passion to help people become the best leaders they can be. I work with companies of all sizes and industries in the East Bay Area, and while my coaching services encompass many areas, leadership is often an area of focus for my clients.
Business executives can benefit from leadership training, and when I work with executives we cover higher-level topics to help hone their already refined skill set. In the sections to follow, I will discuss a few of these topics to give you a better idea of how I can help executives become better leaders.
Effective Communication
Communication is key for leaders at any stage in their careers, and as an executive, you must be able to communicate clearly with people at every level of the company. Executives are in the unique position of conveying the goals of the company’s leadership to everyone who performs the work to accomplish those goals in the organization, so they must be able to clearly explain how everyone’s role fits in and what is expected of them. We cover communication from a different angle in my training, and discuss how listening unlocks the best form of communicating with any team member.
Identifying and Developing Talent
Planning for the future and crafting a strategy to move the company forward is a large part of how an executive adds value to the company, and developing the next wave of company leaders is a chief concern. I don’t discuss much on this topic in beginner leadership courses, but for executives it’s essential to be able to identify people who can play a large role and help them grow into viable candidates for promotions in the future. This is one of the more fun parts of being an executive, and we discuss how to determine if a person could be a long term piece of your company and how to help them reach their potential.
Time and Priority Management
Executives are likely already good time managers, but at the highest corporate level you have to be able to most effectively use the hours you have each day. For this reason, I like to discuss time management with my executive clients and help them effectively use their resources, understand which tasks should be given priority and also help them make time for their personal goals.
