Sometimes it happens due to a leaky pipe, while sometimes it is broken faucet that causes water damage. Water damage, if left untreated can lead to mold growth. Electrical appliances such as washing machines, air-conditioners and refrigerators can also be the perpetrators behind water damage on your property. Speaking of washing machines, in this article, we shall talk about the causes of washing machine leaks.

So, let’s begin.

The Floor Drain

Before you dismantle a washing machine, make sure the floor drain is free from debris. One of the most common types of debris found in floor drains is lint. Sometimes, a common reason behind washing machine leakage is a clogged drain, and not the washing machine itself. The get rid of debris clogging the drain, remove the drain cover and pour in hot water. But before pouring hot water in, make sure you pour baking soda or vinegar. For a bigger clog, a plumbers snake might come in handy.

External Hoses

Have you ever noticed drips around the external supply hoses of your washing machine, just after the filling cycle starts? Dripping is a sign that the external water hoses are corroded and damaged. If the external water supply hoses are in good shape, have the internal washer checked. Sometimes, the internal washers are in dire need of a replacement for a tighter seal.

Inside Hoses

If the supply hoses on the outside are fine and aren’t leaking, check the internal water hoses. These hoses open the washer cabinet and create a connection between the tub and the inlet valve. When the hoses are perforated or cracked, then the problem arises. Furthermore, the spring clamps get worn out with time. If they are loose or corroded, make sure they are replaced as quickly as possible.

Pump and Drain

As the name suggests the job of the pump is to drain water from the washing machine. Different washing machines have different pumps. Some of the pumps are self-driven while some of them are belt-driven. Nowadays, electric pumps in washing machines are extremely popular. A leaky pump must be replaced, as quickly as possible, before it gives birth to water damage. Before repairing or replacing the pump, don’t forget to turn the power off.

Seals

In a washing machine, the seals are used to shut the area between the outer tub and the door. With time, these seals get worn out and begin to crack. If you washing machine leaks during the filling or agitation cycle, the seal might need to be replaced.

The aforementioned signs will help you keep your washing machine in top condition, and free from leakage.
