Custom Car Wrap Design: Doing it right the first time—Franklin, TN

Posted in: Client Examples

Approaching a custom vehicle wrap design takes the right amount of information, design capability, and knowledge of functionality in the wrap design field. Most companies are aware of the positive impact that vehicle wraps have on their marketing, but most are usually unsure where to begin with design. We recommend the client takes some time and gather some pictures of wraps they like, while informing us of a budget they would like to stay within. Budgeting is a very integral part of your wrap project; it sets the tone for expectations, and helps determine whether you want a full, half, partial, or custom wrap. Gathering colors, logos, and as much supplied artwork helps designers formulate a solid base idea to create the optimal look for your wrap.

When starting the actual design for the wrap, your canvas( in this case, your vehicle) is the most important part. The size, panels, contours, windows, etc. all play an integral part in how the wrap will look. Finding ample real estate to place logos and information can be tricky; so prioritizing what you want the vehicle to say is very important. One other item to keep in mind is that designing a car wrap is a 3 dimensional project. It’s a different perspective than designing for a magazine ad, or web layout. The wrap has to have functionality for application purposes, and information has to flow and be legible in the locations they are displayed.

There are many ways companies approach the design process. At 12-Point SignWorks, we offer a few plans of attack, but our recommendation to most is to start with a design study. We begin by offering a $250.00 design study, in which you get 2 designs, and 2 revision rounds. This ends up being applied to your finished invoice. This helps with budgeting, and sets a standard so you get a design you like, but don’t exceed budget. Often times, companies will charge their hourly rate, and allow you to have revision after revision, and before you know it your design fee is matching the materials and install charges.

Custom Vehicle Wrap Design Layout

Starting with a template for your vehicle, our designers will mockup your design from a variety of angles- one for the sides, a view from the roof looking down, a hood design, and a view from the rear. When mocked up next to each other, you can see how the graphics will flow around the vehicle, allowing you to see how the graphics will be applied from all angles. Some graphics will have elements that wrap from the side into the hood or rear, to the roof, or tailgate. Seeing how the wrap flows from panel to panel allows the customer to get a feel for how their wrap will look finished, while giving us a map of how to attack installation.
