Top 5 business marketing mistakes you should avoid

BY: ,

Marketing might be the reason why some businesses thrive while others fail. A proper marketing strategy will help your business thrive and improve visibility and popularity amongst your target audience.

Random marketing without a focus will, however, do the opposite. While you spend a considerable amount of money and resources on a poorly planned marketing campaign, the result is always unfavorable due to its failure to reach the ideal clients for the product.

Marketing costs a lot; therefore, you need to do it right. Are you planning a marketing campaign for your business and don't know how to go about it? Don't worry. In this guide, you'll find some mistakes you should avoid in your next marketing campaign.

  1. You don't know and understand your ideal customers

Businesses thrive on customers. So, if you don't know your ideal client, you won't be able to run a proper marketing campaign to target them. And this will result in a loss for the business.

You should know your customers based on data gotten through proper marketing research and not just assumptions. It will help you know them beyond their age, demography, gender, and so on, and make you understand their psychology – their interests, habits, and wants.

  1. Ignoring your competitors

Regardless of your niche, you'll always have competitors. So, staying unique and differentiable from your competitors is always advised to prevent losing focus. However, you may uncover many strategies by understanding the successes and failures of your biggest competition.

Therefore, perform a SWOT analysis on your business and major competitors to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This result will give you insights into new marketing strategies for your upcoming marketing campaign. You may also use tools like Google search, Facebook ads library, etc., to understand your competitors' marketing strategy.

  1. You ignore your analytics

Whenever you run a marketing campaign, you must track its progress. This result will give you an understanding of whether the campaign is successful or not. It will also help you to determine what to work on, what works best for you, and what doesn't.

So, before running your marketing campaigns, develop your KPIs – Key Performance Indicators – to help track your progress. These KPIs may be conversion rates, digital marketing rates, traffic on your websites and social media accounts, your proximity to your goals on google analytics, call rates, etc.

  1. You don't push for brand awareness and reputation

How your brand is perceived and seen by your potential and existing customers is essential. You need to put your business and products out there to increase your visibility, which helps build their trust in you. Also, this trust will help increase their rate of purchases and engagement with you. Furthermore, it will make them pay more for the same service than others.

  1. You don't push for customer retention

Nowadays, most businesses focus on reaching new customers while neglecting existing ones. While getting a new customer may be rigorous due to the cost and efforts involved, existing customers have a little barrier to purchasing from you due to the trust accrued over time. Also, they tend to buy more from you than new customers.
