Setting clear goals is one of the most crucial aspects to succeeding in business, no matter what industry you're in. Without goals, businesses can operate without a clear plan forward, which can be disastrous.

There are many reasons why businesses fail, and not having clear goals to work toward is one of the top ones. Below are some ways that you can set goals that are both actionable and clear to set you up for success.
Get SMART
There's a common acronym in goal setting called SMART. It stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely.
In other words, your goals need to:
- (S) Specifically list what you want to do
- (M) Provide a way for you to determine success
- (A) Provide a way to be implemented
- (R) Connect to overall company objectives
- (T) Have a deadline
No matter how you go about setting your goals, you'll want to start by making sure they all adhere to the SMART principle.
Brainstorm
Many entrepreneurs set goals either completely on their own or by seeking input from the same "higher-ups" all the time. That's a missed opportunity to draw in diverse input from your team.
Creating an inclusive work environment means setting up a way for all employees to give their feedback in various aspects of the company. By integrating a diverse set of people in the brainstorming process, you'll be making them feel respected, which will eventually lead to higher productivity. You may also get some great ideas that you wouldn't have gotten had you kept the group small.
Prioritize
After you create a list of all the goals you want to accomplish, it's important that you prioritize the ones that are most important first. Conduct a SWOT analysis to identify what your company's Strengths Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats are. This will help you to clearly set priorities for goals, based around the results of the analysis.
By prioritizing your goals, you'll be setting a clear pathway to success, as completing many of the first goals will lead to you accomplishing others down the line.
KPIs
Setting goals is only valuable if you set up clear ways that you can will measure them and have people remain accountable to them. Setting up KPIs, or key performance indicators, is the best way to do that.
Once you set goals, you'll set KPIs around each one. Goals can have one or more KPIs, depending on what needs to be accomplished to reach that particular goal.
They not only keep people accountable to the goal, and provide a way for you to measure success, they also help to motivate people to succeed.
