Every great lawyer needs a great team. No matter how big or small the practice, lawyers need to rely on others to help them provide the best representation for all their clients.

Lawyers not only need extensive legal knowledge, refined courtroom decorum and specialized expertise to succeed. They also need to display great leadership traits as well.
That's why providing lawyers with leadership training is one of the most important things you can do for your firm. Here are some of the core competencies your lawyers should learn as it relates to leadership.
Communication
All good leaders know how to communicate efficiently and effectively with a wide range of people through various mediums.
Lawyers need to know how to effectively communicate their message in the courtroom to judges and jurors. They need to know how to properly convey arguments in written filings. And they also need to communicate well with their internal team via digital channels such as email and chat as well as in person.
Building strong communication skills is essential for any lawyer when it comes to being a leader.
Agility
The legal profession requires a strong ability to be agile. Lawyers need to constantly be learning in an active way. They need to be open to receiving feedback from colleagues, judges and even clients. They need to be able to adapt to situations they've never faced before.
Learning how to approach their job in an agile way will do wonders for helping them achieve consistent success.
Influence
It's no secret that one of the main jobs of a lawyer is to convince others to believe what they're saying. It's the essence of their job in a courtroom, after all.
But, lawyers also need to be able to influence other people both inside and outside their office. The application of external negotiation skills is obvious.
All lawyers, though, will also need to influence colleagues within their own practice. If they feel strongly about an argument or approach to a case, they may need to convince others on their team that their approach is best. The way you do this is by improving influential skills.
Self-Aware
All lawyers need to understand all of their strengths and weaknesses if they want to be successful over the long term. The first part -- identifying strengths -- is often the easy part. It's not hard for a lawyer to be able to boast about what they're good at.
The second part, though -- identifying weaknesses -- can be more challenging. However, it's this part that is much more important to creating and maintaining success.
From a leadership standpoint, having self-awareness allows you to be more agile. It allows you to communicate your needs based on where you need help. It allows you to see where you need improvement, and then work on those areas so you can influence others.
When you conduct a well-rounded assessment of yourself, you'll be able to identify areas that might be holding you back now, which you can then work on to improve.
